You can download the latest installer from the Download page. The FreeCAD installer is provided as a app package (.app) enclosed in a disk image file. Head to Getting started once installation is complete. It also includes uninstallation instructions. This page describes the usage and features of the FreeCAD installer. You can manually install extensions, however, it is much simpler to just use the Addon Manager. If there are any issues with the HomeBrew Cask or Formula you may report them to here. Macros from both repositories can be installed via the Addon Manager directly from FreeCAD. The second one is the Macros recipes page from which you can pick some useful macros to add to your FreeCAD installation. The first one is the official peer-reviewed macro repository on GitHub. See How to install macros for a more detailed description. Next time you start FreeCAD, the macro will appear under the "Installed Macros" item of the Macro menu. You can then save your macro the same way as you save a FreeCAD document. Simply create a new macro, edit it, and paste your code. You can also directly copy/paste python code into a macro, without recording GUI action. See Customize Toolbars for a more detailed description. This, added to the power of python scripting within FreeCAD, makes it possible to easily add your own tools to the interface. This way you can make your macro become a real tool, just like any standard FreeCAD tool. Once your macro is created, all this can be done via the Tools → Customize menu. FreeCAD provides much better ways to use your macro, such as assigning a keyboard shortcut to it or putting an entry in the menu. There are two easy ways to write Python code in FreeCAD: From the Python console (menu View -> Panels -> Python Console), or from the Macro editor (menu Tools -> Macros -> New). Of course it is not practical to load a macro in the editor in order to use it. If you are interested in learning more, the FreeCAD documentation wiki has an extensive section related to Python programming. ![]() ![]() It makes it much easier to find the value you want to check or alter.Ī welcomed improvement is the ability to alter a clip’s parameters while still in the Media panel. Its various parameters are organised into groups (Video, Audio, Effects, Transition, Image and File) and it’s found across the Media, Cut, Edit and Fairlight sections of the interface. Oh how we love the remodelled Inspector panel. The reworked Inspector pane is most welcome, and a new option allows you to alter clips that haven’t yet been added to your timeline (Image credit: Blackmagic Design) Refined inspector You also have the option to manually tweak the framing should you need to. As you crop your project to suit a particular platform (square for Instagram, for instance), you can then use that tool to analyse the content of your clips and Resolve will do its best to keep the action within the frame, even tracking the movement to keep everything centred. One fun new feature, if you’re looking to share clips of your work on social media, is the Smart Reframe tool - which is a Studio only tool. Much better than having a thumbnail representation of whatever the effect does. Working with effects is a little more user friendly: mouse over an effect, and see it applied instantly to your clip, which can help you decide, without dragging it to your timeline, if it’s the right type of effect you wish to use. Finish the trim and the waveform goes back to its original dimension. When you use it, the representation of the affected clip increases in size, making it much easier to see where you need to stop trimming. Some great additions can be really simple things that you would’t think are useful until you try them. The Cut page was a major addition to the previous version, and it too has received some improvements, like the ability to sort clips based on various parameters via the Metadata View. Organise your clips with greater ease thanks to Resolve’s new sorting features (Image credit: Blackmagic Design) Cutting it However, there’s definite potential there which is bound to save a lot of time in the long run. But like any new feature, you need to practice a little with it before you can make the most of it. It can be frustrating sometimes to always have to select a new tool before preforming a certain task, so a contextual tool sounds very refreshing. Perhaps our favourite change comes with the improved contextual editing tool - which changes its function depending where and how you click on a clip. The main improvement being that it’s now easier to control the interface using a keyboard and mouse. Working with audio can feel a little intimidating, and this isn’t helped by the fact that Fairlight can allow you to work with up to 2,000 tracks, enabling you to design extremely complex projects and likely make newcomers run for the hills, so anything designed to help simplify matters is always highly welcome.įairlight is Resolve’s audio section, and it has received major improvements, many of which are aimed at making it easier for the novice user to get into this part of the interface. DaVinci Wide Gamut is a new workflow which provides a universal internal working colour space that’s wider than what cameras can capture, meaning it’ll preserve all image data no matter which device your clip was shot on.Īudio Trim is surprisingly useful: it increases the size of the waveform, making it easier to know where to cut your clip (Image credit: Blackmagic Design) Audio work With the featured enabled (in the project settings), you’ll be offered a menu with a small range of colour workflow presents. Resolve’s Colour Management has undergone a lot of changes. Viewer Wipe Modes, used to easily compare shots, have a few new variations, such as splitting the image diagonally, as a Venetian blind, or with a checkerbroad effect. New tools have been added to your palette, such as HDR Grading, Colour Warper and Magic Mask.Ĭolour Warper is an interesting way of altering the colour and luminance of a clip simultaneously and you can control that change either by clicking and dragging on the preview window, or by changing the position of the points on the tool’s grid.Īs for Magic Mask, it looks like a simple and impressive way to isolate a person or part of a person from the rest of the clip - but that’s a new tool only available in the Ultimate version. Many colour grading features have been improved with new tools added, giving you greater control over the look of your media (Image credit: Blackmagic Design) Color gradingĪs you may know, Resolve started its existence as a colour grading tool, and version 17 has made a lot of advancements and improvements in that section of the software. ![]() ![]() To animals, winter could easily be interpreted as a short, and regular, time of famine and cold.īarnes has studied hibernation and the animals who practice it for over 40 years. Since food doesn’t grow well in cold conditions, winter can be viewed as a time, although short by human standards, of famine. Famines are simply when there is no food available for an extended period of time, mainly because of the environment. Famines aren’t always caused by desert conditions. National Wildlife Federation’s article about Brian Barnes, the director of the Institute of Arctic Biology at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks explains that animals that hibernate do so in anticipation of a famine. Gray squirrels were never included in these sites. However every site that said that squirrels did hibernate specified that they were talking about one of the ground squirrels. There would most likely be fewer predators such as domesticated cats and dogs. With classes in session during the winter months, it may be possible for squirrels to gather food more easily from students’ handouts than it would be in other areas. Some explain that many college campuses are home to this type of squirrel. Many other sites state the same claim about gray squirrels. It also might be only certain types of squirrels, including gray squirrels, who do not hibernate. If the squirrel population is large enough, then people in the area might assume that all of the squirrels are active, all of the time, when in reality, only a fraction is outside of their den at any given time, with the majority peacefully hibernating, out of sight. If people in the area set food out for birds, rabbits and other animals, including their own domesticated four footed friends, such as their dogs and cats, squirrels quickly learn where those places are. This can and does happen, especially if the squirrels know that there is a food supply waiting for them and is easily available. Animals do come out of hibernation, only to return to it soon after, sometimes several times. However, hibernation is not a state that is kept for the entire duration of the cold season. Another site, which isn’t as authoritative, also says gray squirrels don’t hibernate during the winter months. Homeotherms regulate their body temperature, maintaining it at about the same temperature year-round. The zoo claims that these squirrels don’t hibernate because they are homeotherms. ![]() This zoo has many eastern gray squirrels on their grounds, although they are not found in an exhibit, but rather just inhabiting the grounds as they please. The Lincoln Park Zoo, in Chicago, Illinois What do the experts say about these two different types of squirrel and whether they hibernate or not? They have stolen from a nest, but that is not a staple of their diet. Both of these type of squirrel eat nuts, seeds, berries, leaves, roots, fruits, insects, caterpillars, and different grains. The squirrels we are interested in and whether they hibernate or not are those found in the North American continent, specifically the gray squirrel, and the ground squirrel. ![]() One of the smallest is the Pygmy squirrel found in Africa. Some are very large, like those found in India. Squirrels are found everywhere in the world ![]() So, let’s look at the information science has to offer about squirrels and hibernation. This research has also lead to several different discoveries that might be helpful to people’s health in the future. Animal experts and other scientists have been curious about this very same question and have been conducting research for decades. Many animal lovers across North America are united on many different fronts, but one question that has some divided is do squirrels hibernate? Some say they do hibernate but wake up at different times, and others say that squirrels are too small and cannot store up enough body fat to really hibernate. Ground squirrels on the other hand such as the large yellow-bellied marmots found in the Rocky Mountains will often tuck themselves away by early October and are not seen again until April or May. Tree squirrels such as the Eastern Gray Squirrel and the American Red Squirrel do not hibernate, but tend to sleep a lot during the winter months. ![]() ![]() ![]() Yes, you get an eraser that works but for the lack of color these put out, difficulty in blending, and the small color options you need to plan on having other support colors and other types than just these for serious work. These pencils are a little expensive, being in the premium range. The thing cardboard case is just asking for you to remove them and not re-insert after using them. It appears that the design of these is targeted more towards a casual or student atmosphere rather than someone looking for an attractive set at home. The erasers are well-fastened and there have not been many complaints with them breaking after excessive use. The pencils themselves have a color matching hexagonal exterior with the Prismacolor type and color information stamped on them. Honestly, for how much these pencils cost, it wouldn’t have hurt to include a tin or case. The Prismacolor Col-Erase Colored Pencils come in a thin cardboard box, similar to many of the budget offerings out there. This is just a guess on our part but it seems to make sense. We suspect that part of the reason for the extremely light color as well as the somewhat polarized color choices is because those particular colors are easier to erase or perhaps the pigments that are used bond better to the special erasable core. The hexagonal shaft assists with user control and helps in focusing the eraser in on the desired areas. Depending on how much you erase, you might run out of eraser before you run out of pencil, so getting a separate, larger eraser for projects might be a consideration. There can be a little leftover wax that might stay on the paper but it isn’t too big of an issue. The erasing quality does work pretty well. That being said, color does go down pretty consistently and the pencils do respond pretty well to alternating pressures. We noticed a particularly heavy amount of oranges relative to other colors. Couple this with the fact that you can only get up to a 24 pack set, it can limit your freedom in regards to color selection. Shading is difficult with these and blending can be a challenge as well. Because of this, you will be forced to “test” out each pencil on a side piece of paper before being comfortable applying it to your actual work. ![]() You will find it much lighter and also a different tone altogether. The color output is nowhere near the representative outside the color the pencils advertise. Visual Appeal – 2.5/5ĭespite claims otherwise, the color intensity is lacking. They come in 12 or 24 packs with hexagonal exteriors. Couple this with a severe lack of color choices and you have a lot of factors to consider. However, color intensity comes into question, especially for the relatively high price. Prismacolor gives us a unique offering in their set of erasable colored pencils, the Col-Erase These come with erasers and a special core material that promises to still have the renowned deep and vivid color output of other lines as well as the ability to remove said color when necessary.
